BKLYN DESIGN Launches Competition for Brooklyn-Made Innovative Installation

For the first time in the show’s history, BKLYN DESIGNS is commissioning an original, site-specific installation to be displayed at the Brooklyn Expo Center in Greenpoint from May 5-7, 2017.

This juried competition is open to Brooklyn-based artists, designers, architects, engineers and others with demonstrated experience in the conceptualization, design and production of creative installations.

The installation, based on the concept of connectivity, offers another avenue for designers, architects, artists and makers to illustrate their
work during NYCxDESIGN, the official citywide celebration of design, to a large audience of design trade professionals and design savvy consumers.

Concepts should also take the BKLYN DESIGNS venue into consideration and demonstrate an understanding that it will coexist with exhibitors, a curated marketplace, panels, workshops, and visitors over the course of the three-day show. Installations can be grounded or suspended and exterior installations, if weather-resistant, will also be considered.

Presented by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and co-produced with Novità Communications, BKLYN DESIGNS is Brooklyn’s premier design event showcasing the borough’s strong creative community.

Attendees include designers, architects, builders, store buyers, industry influencers, educators, urban planners and design-savvy consumers, all coming together to celebrate the borough's rich design heritage, iconic style and bustling creative community.
 

Proposals with creative concepts and a mission statement explaining how the project relates to BKLYN DESIGNS and the theme of connectivity are due by March 10, 2017.

Submissions will be reviewed by a jury of design experts and the winner will be announced in late March. The winning designer or design team will be awarded $1,000 for the design and construction of the installation and showcased as a special feature of the show.

SKETCH NIGHT at the Brant Foundation Inspired by STEVEN SHEARER

You are invited to participate in a Sketch Workshop with a professional model and explore Steven Shearer's multifaceted drawing techniques reflecting the history of portraiture and figuration.

Sketch Night at The Brant Foundation is free of charge and open to artists of all ages and experience levels. Participants are invited to sketch from a professional model in one of the foundation’s gallery spaces, which currently houses an exhibition by Steven Shearer.

Shearer’s work draws upon a visual lexicon of portraiture and representation of the body, often using found imagery that he collects and archives as source material. Through this process, contemporary imagery is distilled into the tradition of portraiture revealing affinities between various modes of figuration throughout history to the present.

This workshop focuses on the dialogue that exists between Shearer’s formal drawings, preparatory sketches and finished paintings and invites participants to explore the same in their own artistic practice.

The Case For Mark Rothko | The Art Assignment | PBS Digital Studios

PBS Digital Studies presents, via "The Art Assignment", a video about Mark Rothko, covering in four minutes the artist's biography between Europe and the United States.

After studying different art styles and movements of the period, Rothko questioned the role of art in connection to the social and political situation in the world. From then on he experimented with color and hazy areas, arriving at "full" abstraction in 1947. For Rothko, a work of art connects with human emotions through its structure and color.

"The Art Assignment" is a video series that introduces artists and explores the history of art through the lens of the present.

Simple Mud Room

Living through the seasons in the Northeast reminds me of my daughter's favorite book as a child: Going on a Bear Hunt where the father, the kids and the dog go looking for a bear and when they find one, they run home through the snow storm (Hoooo woooo), the forest (Stumble trip), the mud (Squelch squerch), the water (Splash splosh) and back through the grass (Swishy swashy). They then run into the house (without wiping their feet), up the stairs, into bed and under the covers with the bear looking through the window. I’m sure that having a mud room to shed the wet and muddy layers would have made mom happier when she came home.

Just about every home we design includes a mud room which is good for keeping bears out, but more importantly provides a place to take off boots and coats and leave the mud and slush behind. Mud rooms are also the primary place for organization of outerwear for future excursions. More elaborate spaces include slop sinks for cleaning gear and storage space for sports equipment and even sometimes a dog grooming area. Some layouts also work as an airlock to the rest of the home.

The basic requirements include a non slip, water resistant, durable floor. Walls and cubbies should be made of a rugged material such as wood with plenty of room to hang coats and store boots, gloves and mittens. Occasionally we will add a center drain to the floor for easy wash down (make sure the baseboards are waterproof). A bench with or without a hinged seat top is required for putting on and taking off those extra tight boots. Near the ceiling, a long shelf comes in handy for hats and other paraphernalia.

Even though the mud room can be the smallest room in the house, from its organizing capacity to the impact of a cleaner home, this little room earns its keep.

Block Printing on Fabric with Jen Hewett, Drop Forge & Tool, Saturday, January 21, 2017

Start the New Year perfecting your creative skills or acquiring new ones like Block Printing on Fabric—something soul-filling that you have wanted to do for a very long time, but have put off because of other responsibilities and commitments.

Workshop: Have you ever wanted to print your own fabric for your craft and DIY projects? In this class and with a few simple tools, you will learn how to carve printing blocks and transfer your designs onto fabric. You’ll leave with your own, custom-printed fabric and the knowledge and tools to work on more projects at home.

Supplies: All the special tools you’ll need to get started will be supplied, as well as a yard of cotton muslin fabric to practice on.

Sustenance: Snacks, beverages and a tasty locally sourced lunch will be provided.

Your instructor, Jen Hewett, is a San Francisco-based printmaker, surface designer and teacher. Jen and her brightly-printed bags have been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle, Anthology Magazine, UPPERCASE, and Design*Sponge. She has taught hundreds of students both online and in person and has led workshops for corporate design teams.

The Workshop is open to the public. Because sharp tools are used, this class is limited to adult students.
